How to install on Android, step by step

The apps install from this site (they are not on Google Play yet). Five steps, about two minutes; step 3 is only needed the first time.

The screens are illustrations: the exact wording changes a little with the brand and the Android version.

Go to Downloads

  1. 1Download the file

    On Downloads, tap the gold button of your app. The browser warns that this kind of file can be harmful: it is the usual warning for any app that does not come from Google Play. Tap «Download anyway».

  2. 2Open it

    When it finishes, tap «Open» in the notice at the bottom. If it already closed, find it in your notifications or in the Files app → Downloads.

  3. 3Allow installing from the browser

    Android says that for your security it cannot install apps from this source. Tap «Settings», turn on «Allow from this source» and go back with the arrow.

    Only the first time. After installing you may turn it off again; to update, the app asks for permission on its own.

  4. 4Install

    You will see «Do you want to install this app?». Tap «Install» and wait a few seconds.

    If Google Play Protect says it does not recognise the app, tap «More details» and then «Install anyway». It says so of every app that is not on Google Play; you can check the file is ours with its SHA-256.

  5. 5Open it

    Tap «Open». The app asks for your language and helps you create your account. Done: it is now on your home screen.

Depending on your phone's brand

Samsung (One UI)

  • If you download with Samsung Internet instead of Chrome, the permission in step 3 is for «Samsung Internet».
  • The permission is called «Install unknown apps» → «Allow from this source».
  • If the option does not even appear: Settings → Security and privacy → «Auto Blocker». Turn it off, install, and turn it back on.

Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO (HyperOS / MIUI)

  • Before installing, the phone may scan the app and show a countdown: wait and tap «Continue» or «Install anyway».
  • If the file does not open, open it from the «File Manager» app → Downloads.
  • The permission in step 3 may be under Settings → Privacy (or Privacy protection) → «Install unknown apps».

Motorola

  • It works like plain Android: the same steps as above.
  • The downloaded file is in the «Files» app → Downloads.
  • If you do not see the notice of step 3, the permission is in Settings → Apps → Special app access → «Install unknown apps» → Chrome.

Google Pixel

  • Exactly the steps above, with Chrome.
  • Play Protect may ask you to confirm; tap «More details» → «Install anyway».
  • The file stays in «Files» → Downloads in case you want to open it again.

If it says «App not installed»

Not enough space

Free at least 300 MB (photos, videos or apps you do not use) and tap the file again.

You already have a version that does not match

It happens if you installed the app from another place or have a newer version. First make a backup (Settings → Backup), uninstall the old app and then install this one. Uninstalling deletes the chats on that phone.

The file arrived incomplete

Delete it from Downloads and download it again, ideally on Wi-Fi. If you like, compare its SHA-256 with the one on the page.

Older phone (32-bit)

If your phone is several years old, use the «universal version» link under the gold button.

Android too old

The apps need Android 9 or newer. You can see it in Settings → About phone → Android version.

Play Protect or the phone's blocker stopped it

In the notice, tap «More details» → «Install anyway». On Samsung, turn off «Auto Blocker» for a moment (see above).
